Alternative medicine is something I too am exploring.  Before I trek down that road though I will say this: nothing beats a qualified doctor/specialist.  That’s number one.  I personally have been to so many doctors in my lifetime, who did not adequately diagnose me, I have become a cynic when it comes to the practice of medicine.  In fact, had I stayed with one doctor I would not be here today.

Having said that, I will say finding a doctor you can talk with is most important.  If your doctor’s bedside manner is similar to that of a rat — inattentive and jumping all over the place — it is time to change doctors.

Rose Emerson is a municipal judge in Oregon by day and by night, she is a Reiki practitioner.  Reiki combines the word Rei, which means “God’s wisdom” with Ki, or “life force energy,” and practitioners believe they can direct that energy – an unseen force that flows through all living beings – into their clients’ bodies, affecting positive change.  This is what Emerson does.

Emerson does not claim to heal people though she has seen some miraculous events, she does say Reiki helps keep the wires of your personal house (your body) properly connected and running smoothly. Emerson’s clients are also active participants in a Reiki session, she said. Those who believe in Reiki and are receptive to what it can do will get more out of it.

Judge Emerson has her own story.  Emerson’s acceptance of alternative medicine came after her own personal struggles with health problems.  Diagnosed with lupus, Emerson was taking the typical cocktail of drugs to ward off her symptoms. She took massive doses of steroids and drugs to manage her heart arrhythmia. Doctors prescribed her drugs to manage symptoms wrought by other drugs, she said. Finally, she decided to ease herself off pharmaceuticals and manage her lupus with acupuncture, vitamins and herbs. With the help of a naturopath, she was successful.

Emerson has also started using a biofeedback machine, which senses electro-magnetic frequencies in the body. Her machine interprets the frequencies of specific parts of the body and then pulses healing vibrations through bands on the ankles, wrists and head.
