Long Beach Pride: No Video Cameras Allowed

Posted at May 21, 2006 09:35 PM in Prides .

IMG_3832a.jpgSo what was I thinking when I brought the video camera to a location where there is live music? I dunno, stupid I guess. Yep, no dogs and no video cameras. Still cameras, however, were acceptable and that meant getting my ticket, walking back to my car, putting the video camera away, walking back to the park, and finally entering the park.

This one guy, a long tall drink of water, had to leave because his little terrier could not go. I experienced this at Hollywood Pride when I took little Destiny. That was fine though, she and I hung out on the street drinking water and people watching.

The little bit of video I did get was shot on the way to the park from my car. I am not a good gauge of crowds but I will guess the numbers were well into the thousands and the crowd grew as evening drew near.

The little bit of video I have here shows the beautiful scenes around the park and the crowds. You will also hear the music blasting from one of many stages. Oh yeah, the voice you hear is me, running my mouth, while shooting video.

I have never been one for going to Prides because I bore easily. Being two steps away from 50 makes me a little old now for look, look, stop, look some more, look, stop, look - it gets old. People watching however was fabulous, particularly the young women and there were lots of young women there, in fact, there were lots and lots of young people there.

I actually ran into a few folks I know while there and of particular note was a conversation I had about the young folks we saw and how "back in the day" you would have seen more middle-aged or older gays and lesbians, but not a lot of young people, particularly young black men and women in their teens or early 20s.

Again, being two steps off 50, I was taken aback with the "thug life" and "thug life lite" look, but then again, I had to remember I used to wear halters and hot pants and the older wise ones thought this unbecoming of a young woman. It's the culture, I may not get it but it is what it is and I should not judge like those who judged me.

IMG_3835a.jpgI did run into a few women selling tees and some of them were fabulous. The photo above was taken at a booth where I found two women from Alternative Paradise. The Dykea shirt was something I would have taken home with me, along with a few others had I been prepared to buy the house out. Next time, if they are at any of the prides I attend this year, I will be prepared to buy that one and more.

IMG_3837a.jpgI also ran into another group of women selling shirts and they too had some worth sporting around town, particularly the one that had me laughing aloud. I could not help myself. It read, "Jesus is coming, look busy." I'd like to give that one to a few zealots out there but then again, that might appear sacrilegious. These women are from Tee'd off Tee's, Inc

If you see these women anywhere, check out their shirts. I promise I'll be prepared next time. More images from Long Beach Pride are available on Flickr.
