What People Fail To Realize

Posted at April 9, 2006 11:21 AM in GLBT Issues .

What people fail to realize is most realize they are gay or lesbian at a relatively young age. Like me, at 13, I too realized I was different. I was not like my peers, other girls, interested in boys. I was falling hopelessly in love with some of my teachers and other female classmates. Yes, at 13, I knew and now, at 47, I now know why some of our young commit suicide. It is because they are not understood, not accepted, because they are being teased, because they are different.

This video is a young spoken word artiist's telling of how tough it is to be a teenager, to be African American, and to be gay. Imagine being all three. Spoken word artist Kenneth Morrison dedicates this poem to his friend Devon, who committed suicide at age 13.

Thank you, thank you, thank you Angela for continuing this labor of love. I know you don't have to do it, but you do it anyway and I sincerely appreciate our dedication. Even when you take it down, you never cease to care. You are indeed a gift to the community.

Love ya.
