About

Women In The Life

EVENTS

Women In the Life ("WITL") was created in 1993 to empower and enrich the lives of lesbians of color, through educational, social and cultural programming, and support services. The founder of WITL, Sheila Alexander-Reid is a Black Lesbian Activist and Entrepreneur who started WITL because at the time there were no safe spaces for lesbians of color to socialize, network and share their sisterhood. Initially WITL brought lesbians of color together through informal social events, such as poetry readings, dances, community fundraisers, and workshops.

MAGAZINE

Subsequently, WITL created an information resource in its publication Women In The Life - the magazine. Published since November 1993, the magazine is now a quarterly with a substantial national and international subscriber base.

WEBSITE

Most recently, WITL has expanded its audience via the interactive Internet portal www.womeninthelife.com. Lesbians of color from various countries, cultures, socioeconomic backgrounds, and political perspectives have a forum where they may socialize exchange ideas, agendas, and information. Furthermore, this web site provides financial information, community news, entertainment, and health-related resources.

NON-PROFIT ASSOCIATION

Women In The Life, Association, Inc. ("WITL") is a 501(c)(3) non-profit association whose goal is to enrich the lives of lesbians of color through direct service programming, education, issue advocacy, and resource development around issues that enhance the lives of lesbians of color, their families and allies.
